Course Description:

M.Sc. in Information Technology is a three semester (18 months) part-time degree programme consisting of a common Information core, and a compulsory research project. In order to obtain the MSc in Information Technology your are required to gain 48 credits. One credit is equivalent to one hour of lectures or other classroom activity per week for one semester of approximately 14 weeks duration, or two hours of practical or project work per week for one semester of approximately 14 weeks duration

Eligibility Requirements:
Candidates applying for the MSc in Information Technology shall have:

A recognized degree in a relevant field accepted by the Faculty and approved by the Senate

OR

The Associate Membership, Graduateship (as appropriate) or equivalent of a recognized professional institute in a relevant field

WITH

minimum of two years of appropriate experience after obtaining such membership accepted to the Faculty and approved by the Senate.


Course Structure:
The Post Graduate Diploma is of 12 months (part time) duration while MSc is of 18 months duration (part time). Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology and MSc in Information Technology offer common curricula. Lecturers will be held during weekends. Those who satisfy this criterion at the end of the first year would be able to select one of the following two options:

(a) Continue for the MSc in Information Technology

(b) Exit the programme with a Post Graduate Diploma

Those who continue to follow MSc in Information Technology will need to follow a Research Project of 06 months duration.

INTRODUCTION:

Statistics is an extremely diverse discipline and can be applied to almost every type of science. The truth is that no applied science is complete without statistical reasoning and support. Statistics offers a wide range of career opportunities in many fields. In general, applied statisticians can easily fit into careers in, Computer Science, Agriculture, Education, Medicine, Economics, and Marketing, to name but a few.
The Department of Statistics conducts a two year part time course leading to a M.Sc. Degree in Applied Statistics. The programme consists of two components; Coursework and Research. After successful completion of the coursework component the students could qualify to do the research component which enables them to obtain the M.Sc. in Applied Statistics if he/she wishes to. However, those who do not qualify to do the research component can still leave with a Postgraduate Diploma, if necessary criteria are met. The course was originally designed and implemented in year 1976, with the assistance from the Department of Applied Statistics, University of Reading, which is a leading University in the UK.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
(i) A Degree of a recognized University in one of the following Sciences: Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Agricultural, Biological, Earth, Medical, Physical, or Veterinary

OR

(ii) Any other qualification judged to be equivalent to (i) above, by the Faculty of Science
The selection will be based on performance of a written examination & an interview.

A sound mathematical knowledge is recommended

COURSE STRUCTURE:

The course consists of two components; Coursework component (3 Semesters) and Research component (1 Semester). The coursework component consists of course work, practicals, a group-project and examinations at the end of each of the three semesters. Proceeding to the fourth and the final semester is mainly based on the performance of the coursework component. Those who proceed are required to submit a Masters dissertation. The lectures, will be conducted on two evenings per week and on Saturday mornings. The medium of Instruction is English. Students will also have access to University library facilities.

This program is specially designed to target practicing graduates in the private sector as well as government as managerial level who wish to build and advance their careers in this most fast-changing and challenging field of study. This new course is scheduled to commence in January 2009. This is a two-year part-time degree program. Lectures conducted on Saturdays and Sundays.
A candidate is eligible for the award of the postgraduate Diploma in Financial Mathematics with the successful completion of the Two year program. The Master of Science degree requires the completion of a research project during the second year.

The following eligibility criteria are used for admission.

1. The degree of Bachelor of Science of Engineering of the University of Moratuwa , or

2. The degree of the Bachelor of Science of a recognized university with Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Science as one of the main subjects, or


3. Any other special degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or Management, the recognition of the degree to be judged by the faculty and approved by the Senate of University of Moratuwa. Or

4. At least membership of a recognized professional institution in a relevant field and a minimum of one year experience after obtaining a such membership, the acceptability of the professional qualification of the candidate, the recognition of the institute and the relevancy of the field for this purpose shall be judged by the Faculty and approved by the Senate of University of Moratuwa.
